Drove up to Circle on Friday looking for historic sites. Two of the places I stopped at were Deadwood Cemetery just outside Central, and the Pioneer Cemetery at Circle. Both contain graves dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Deadwood Cemetery |
The Deadwood Cemetery is located on Deadwood Creek. The cemetery is small, only about a 1/4 acre. The creek also used to be called Hogem Creek or Hog ’em Gulch. Those names came from the discoverer trying to control most of the richest diggings by registering claims for all of his extended family, and, supposedly, for numerous fictitious personages as well. When it came time to name the creek at a miner’s meeting some one suggested that Hogem Creek would be a fitting name.

Circle Cemetery |
The cemetery at Circle is much larger, probably covering about an acre. It is a mile hike southeast of the town proper. The cemetery is in the midst of the woods and the mosquitoes can be vicious. If you go make sure to take along bug dope.
